      <image:title>Depression - Depression</image:title>
<image:caption>Depression affects 1 in 8 Australian men and 1 in 6 women. Everyone experiences ups and downs from time to time, but Depression can be present when the down periods last for longer than we would expect, and despite our best efforts, simply aren’t going away. This can mean we avoid people or important things like work, loose interest in activities that we previously found enjoyable, or become more easily stressed or agitated. People with depression can feel hopeless, or worthless, and even have suicidal thoughts. Depression can feel like you are stuck, or in complete despair, but there is hope and it can be treated. <image:title>Addictions - Addictions</image:title>
<image:caption>Addictions can take may forms. The most common are alcohol and other drugs (AOD), however other addictions such as pornography, gambling, internet, and food are also challenging to live with and overcome. These often present alongside other psychological issues and can feel like they help to manage stress, anxiety, and even depression, however they can actually make things worse. Addictions refer to patterns of behaviours that impact social, occupational or academic functioning. These behaviours are often learned attempts to self soothe or avoid painful experiences. The challenge with addictions is that the avoidance of sobriety can make it painfully unpleasant, and escaping reality can often feel safer. At Adaptive Counselling and Psychology, we can provide practical strategies to support managing addictions, and explore the underlying reasons for their development. <image:title>Personality Disorders - Personality Disorders</image:title>
<image:caption>Personality Disorders refer to a cluster of symptoms that together cause distress and impact functioning. A common one is Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) which affects 2-6% of Australians, and hallmarked by difficulties in emotional regulation. There is no one single cause for personality disorders including BPD, and often the cluster of symptoms that are experienced by people with personality disorders are attempts to cope with the challenges that are associated with the diagnoses (e.g. anxiety, depression, difficult interpersonal relationships). Personality Disorders can be managed and treated through various therapies, however often we find that there is trauma that underlies the experience and needs to be healed. At Adaptive Counselling and Psychology can support to both manage symptoms and heal traumas associated with personality disorders. Get in touch with us to find out more.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Anxiety - Anxiety</image:title>
<image:caption>Anxiety can take many different forms, however is typically experienced as worry or tension, and is often accompanied by racing thoughts. Anxiety is a normal part of being human, and in fact it is what has helped us survive and evolve (after all, the cave men and women who were worried about the sabretooth tiger were the ones who survived!). Anxiety can absolutely be helpful, but when it’s voice starts to get too loud and prevent us from doing things, that’s when it can become a problem. There are many ways to manage anxiety and get on with life such as thought reframing, acceptance, mindfulness, and relaxation. At Adaptive Counselling and Psychology, we can support to get on top of anxiety, and understand and challenge the underlying reasons for it being in control. <image:title>PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)</image:title>
<image:caption>Experiences of heightened stress can change the way our brain interprets and responds to future stressors. It is not possible to process extreme trauma when we are just trying to survive through it, and the memories of these events can linger long after the threat has gone. Unfortunately our brains can’t always distinguish between the memory, and the actual event, and this is where symptoms can surface. Whilst we can’t undo the events that have happened, PTSD can be treated and managed through psychological therapy. Get in touch today to find out how we can help.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Anger - Anger</image:title>
<image:caption>Anger is a normal, and helpful human emotion that often gets confused with the less helpful behaviour of aggression. Anger as an emotion is a warning sign and tells us that something is not right. It encourages us to re-assert our boundaries so that we protect ourselves against threat. Anger often protects against more painful emotions such as sadness, or shame, and it is these that aggressive behaviours are in response to. Processing, understanding and exploring anger can help us to get in control of it. Get in touch to find out how we can help.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stress - Stress</image:title>
<image:caption>Someone once said that the greatest tension is having no tension at all. Stress is what happens when an object is unable to manage the demands placed on it. This happens to us humans all the time, and contrary to a lot of belief, Stress can be a good thing! It can help motivate us to take action, builds immune functions (in the short term) and help us problem solve. However if we are experiencing ongoing, or long-term stress, we start to see it’s harmful side effects. Stress is an unavoidable part of life, however it can be managed and we can learn strategies to manage stress, and harness it’s helpful properties. <image:caption>Occupational therapy is used to increase independence, functioning and autonomy in a person’s life. Occupational therapists use assessments and practical interventions to help people achieve their goals and improve functioning in areas they may have previously struggled. The term ‘occupation’ isn’t just used for working, it includes things such as domestic activities, personal care, community engagement or anything that is meaningful to the individual. Occupational therapists also place heavy emphasis on a person’s environment and help address concerns or issues. Still have questions? <image:title>ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)</image:title>
<image:caption>ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 7.6% of children and 5% of Adults. Onset of ADHD typically occurs before age 12, but can often go misdiagnosed due to the presence of other comorbid mental health challenges such as anxiety and stress. Symptoms include difficulties with attention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity that interfere with activities and participation. The symptoms of ADHD can interfere with cognitive and social development, academic and occupational achievement, or daily living and participation in leisure activities. Adult ADHD is becoming more widely recognised and can predominantly include inattentive symptoms such as difficulty sustaining attention on tasks, distractibility and organisational challenges. This can often present as procrastination, but with ADHD the pattern is consistent throughout life, and can result in feelings of failure, and low self worth. Treatment for ADHD is recommended to include a combination of psychological and pharmacological interventions (i.e. therapy and medication). At Adaptive Counselling and Psychology we can help identify and manage symptoms of ADHD in both children and adults and support treatment through cognitive and behavioural management strategies. We can also work with treating psychiatrists and GPs and support linking in with medical professionals to assist with diagnostic clarity and medication. Contact us to find out more.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Adjustment Issues - Adjustment Issues</image:title>
<image:caption>Adjustment issues refer to the challenges individuals face when adapting to new circumstances, environments, or life stages that create significant change and lead to stress. This can include relocating to a different place, starting a new job, or dealing with major life changes. When the stress of adjusting to change is too high, it can sometimes lead to the conditions that we refer to as Adjustment Disorder. Coping with adjustment issues requires flexibility, patience, and a willingness to navigate the discomfort that often accompanies various adjustments. Seeking support can aid in the adjustment process and contribute to a smoother transition to the new situation, and help find ways to manage the difficulties. At Adaptive Counselling and Psychology, we can provide the support needed to navigate these challenges, and assist finding the tools to help you progress. Sometimes, children or teenagers may need a space to just get things off their chest or to explore resolutions to a problem they aren't comfortable sharing with friends or family. Other times they may be facing a more serious emotional or behavioural struggle that could require psychological support.
